(BOISE, ID) Just in time for resolutions, dieting and self-improvement projects, Story Story Night’s January 31 event, HOOKED: Stories of Cravings and Compulsions, zeroes in on the pleasures and pains of our addictive personalities. The live storytelling program starts at 7 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm) at the Linen Building, located at 1402 W. Grove St. in downtown Boise’s Linen District. Admission is $5 at the door. All ages, full bar with ID, and Pie Hole pizza available.
On the last Monday of every month, Story Story Night presents true stories on a theme, told live on stage and without notes. Featured storytellers share a story on the theme, followed by an open story slam. Musician Dan Costello performs, with host Jessica Holmes.
The featured storytellers for HOOKED are Elisabeth McKetta, Elizabeth Rodgers and Al Blank. McKetta recounts the recovery and relapses of a chapstick junkie. Rodgers spends a Hawaiian dream vacation on someone else’s heroin detox. Blank befriends then battles the bottle with poetic intensity.
The featured storytellers become judges in the story slam after an intermission with live music. Names are drawn from a hat, and the chosen few have 5 minutes to tell a true story on the theme. The winner receives a prize from Rediscovered Books.
“Bad habits. Good times,” says Jessica Holmes, Story Story Night host, copywriter and marketing director. “Everyone has something ordinary or odd that drives them, somewhat against their will. This theme is about the clash between internal desires and external realities. Our cravings and compulsions show us what we, as human beings, are really made of.”
An open call now goes out for featured storytellers for upcoming Story Story Nights. Mon. February 28 is STAR-CROSSED LOVE: Stories of Fated Attraction. To submit to become a featured storyteller, email the beginning, middle and end of a true story on an upcoming theme to storystorynight@live.com. Featured story submissions are due by the first Monday of each month. Learn more at www.storystorynight.org/featured-storytellers.html.
